The Lost Colony at Roanoke
In our class we recently learned about the lost colony of Roanoke. England's first colony Roanoke was settled in 1585. Sir Walter Raleigh, an English explorer organized an expedition and established a new colony for England in North America. All went well for awhile.
In 1586, both Indians and settlers were short of food and the new harvest was months away. Friendship between the two groups weakened. Indians destroyed crops and fish traps that were the colonists. John White came from England to Roanoke Island with his daughter Eleanor Dare. White realized they needed more food for Roanoke. He decided to go back to England to get the food supplies. Just before he left Eleanor had a baby and named her Virginia Dare. Virginia was the first English baby to be born in the New World.
It took three years for White to return to Roanoke. When he got there he was surprised to see that all the colonists had vanished. CRO were carved on a tree. John White knew that there was an Indian tribe named Croatoan Indians. Had the colonists gone with the Indians? Had the Indians attacked? John White never found the 116 people that had vanished. To this day the mystery of the lost colony has never been solved. Archaeologists have many different theories of what happened to all these people and the colony of Roanoke!By Heather
