HEART BURN
My name is Dr. Kevin.
I have been a doctor for seven years. Today I will be dealing with a patient
who has heartburn. Heartburn is a bad thing. You can get heartburn by having
too many warm or hot liquids. When you have too many warm or hot liquids
the left and right ventricles burn up and your heart gets really hot. It
can get hotter then 225 degrees.
Even though
the heart is so hot it will still pump blood. The ventricles burn up and
let go of your heart and you can still breathe, but it is not as easy to
do things like play sports or run around.
We are trying
to cool down the heart and get it back to the atrium. This surgery is very
dangerous. We can only have the best doctors in the operating room. If
we make one mistake this person can die or be paralyzed for life. We can't
have any distractions.
This is a very
rare surgery. You can go to the room next door to videotape the surgery.
Anybody who is watching this video today will learn not to have too many
hot liquids.
We will be operating
in a very cold room. We are hoping that the coldness will help cool down
the body.
We are going
to hook the fake heart up and put the heart in a special cooling box. The
patient will be sleeping during the surgery. We have to put anesthesia
around the heart and cut out the place where the skin is. Then we will
have to work very quickly and carefully. The operation will take about
three hours. I am now going to ask you to leave, and please be quiet. Thank
you.
